Ethical Coffee and Agros: Land, Hope, Life.

Most of our customers are aware of our commitment to ethical coffee and our relationship with Agros.  One of the questions we are asked frequently is, “What does Agros do to create this change?” or (slightly summarized) “How does Agros work?.” Well, I wanted to take a second to share with you a quick glimpse of ethical coffee and Agros International.

Ethical Coffee and Agros

Agros.org states what they are on the front page in a nutshell:

“Agros International is committed to breaking the cycle of povery for rural families in Central America and Mexico by enabling landless communities to achieve land ownership and economic stability. Having learned that the root causes of poverty extend across communities and are passed down from generation to generation, the Agros development model is holistic, sustainable, and focused on long term results. This commitment to the long-term sustainability of a whole community serves to break the cycle of poverty in all its forms.”

By applying this same philosophy to sourcing coffee — we create ethical coffee. Ethical coffee is only Organic, Shade-Grown, and Fairly Traded.

Why organic coffee? By only purchasing USDA Certified Organic, our farmer’s are encouraged to make the safe choice for themselves and their families.

Why Shade-Grown? By only purchasing 100% shade-grown coffee we’re encouraging our farmer’s to prevent soil erosion and ensure the sustainability of their land.

By only purchasing our coffee at upwards of three times the price of fair trade coffee we are making a commitment to ethical coffee.

What makes Agros work is also what makes their organization a perfect fit for our Coffee Lover’s Club members. Agros is NOT an organization that makes a habit of giving out cash, services, or goods to “help” a needy family. They believe, as does CICR, that that doesn’t solve anything. Agros believes that giving a handout causes a dependancy that isn’t healthy and doesn’t promote self-sustainability. We believe ethical coffee comes from forming a stronger long-term partnership with coffee farmers. This ensures a helping hand not simply an unsustainable handout. Ethical coffee must be sustainable.

The Agros Model to Ethical Coffee

  • Community Organization“Help families define a vision for a new community and develop the local leadership required to create a self-sustaining, thriving community.”
  • Land Ownership “Work with families to identify and purchase agricultural land on credit and use their payments to purchase land for other new communities.”
  • Community Education and Training“Create opportunities for adequate healthcare, education, adult literacy and spiritual growth.”
  • Housing and Infrastructure“Implement community and individual construction projects such as houses, schools, irrigation systems, latrines, infrastructure and community centers.”
  • Sustainable Economic Growth“Develop agricultural production and support income-generating activities through microenterprise loans and technical training.”
  • Passing on the Blessing“Give other communities the opportunity to own land through repaid loans and empower them to dream of a brighter future for their children.”

We feel it’s important that you — the Coffee Lover’s Club member — knows exactly what ethical coffee means. We feel you  should know what your purchases are doing to create hope for others.

Coffee of the Month – June

Coffee of the Month – June

Papua New Guinea Coffee and Sumatra Coffee is the perfect blend of two great coffees. The Papua New Guinea coffee brings subtle chocolate tones while the Sumatra coffee provides distinct dried fruit tones and ties the two together with a nutty base. This coffee is always a favorite of our customers each time we bring it out as coffee of the month. Papua New Guinea and Sumatra are both Indonesian countries that grow coffee as their main cash crop.

Sumatra is the largest island located entirely in Indonesia. The largest city in Sumatra is Medan with a population just under 3.5 million people. As a whole, Sumatra is not very densely populated with about 96 people per square kilometer. It is, however, the 5th most populate island in the world. The coffee Camano Island Coffee Roasters offers comes from the Gayo Mountains. For more information you can visit Wikipedia.

Papua New Guinea is part of the Australasia ecozone which includes Australia, New Zealand, eastern Indonesia, and several Pacific Island groups. Many of the surrounding islands contain entirely different species of birds and animals leading experts to believe the islands were never linked. Unfortunately, only 3% of Papua New Guinea is privately held. The rest is held under a 99 year State Lease or held by the state.

For more information you can visit Wikipedia. We have also featured Papua New Guinea back in April of 2009 and you can read some different information there.

This is a great coffee to wake up to as well as enjoy after dinner with dessert.

Enjoy!

More Control Over Your Account

We’ve been listening to our customers’ feedback on our website and account management system online. Behind the scenes, we’ve had a team working hard to implement many changes these last couple months. Finally, we are happy to announce that we’ve completely revamped the Coffee Lover’s Club account page.

Our customers have asked to be able to see their order history. We’ve now added a link called “Manage Account and View Order History” which allows our customers to view a full list of their past orders (both club orders and individual orders)! Another question we’ve run into very frequently is: “How do I change my password on my account?” Until now, only we could do that for you. Finally, we’ve added this functionality into our system!

Lastly, we’ve found that when our customers tell others about our company, our mission, and our coffee, their friends want to become a part of it all. In the past, they’ve had to call and tell us the name of the friend that referred them (since we give a free shipment for each referral!) That was a long process that was confusing to our customers. Now, on the account page, there is a link that allows you to refer up to 3 friends or family members at a time. This can be used as often as you want (you don’t have to stop at three) to refer friends to us. It’s also a smart system and will let us know that you referred that friend to us if they join our club, making the whole process easy and quick!

So, log in to your account when you have time and explore the new features and options available to you! Feel free to send any feedback or comments to customerservice@camanoislandcoffee.com and we’ll read each and every one to make sure we’re taking the best care of our customers as possible!

Thank you for creating continuing change with us!

Changing Appearances to Reflect the Inner Purpose

We’ve been working really hard on making our image match our purpose. There are so many great reasons to buy our coffee and we find that sometimes we lose our purpose AND our customers’ attention when trying to relay that message to them. Sure, we have organic, fairly traded, shade grown, top 1% of the coffee available on the market (and if you’re already buying from us, you probably started skimming because you’ve heard that message so much!) Really though, what is our main purpose? Sure, we’re a business trying to make money, but there is so much more to it than that.

With these thoughts in mind, we set out to rework the look of our site and will continue to update the message as the weeks progress. We wanted to first share this with our readers, our facebook fans, and our twitter followers. CamanoIslandCoffee.com has been redesigned to convey our heart and our focus. What good is great coffee that doesn’t also bring hope and restoration to the growers?

Check it out! https://camanoislandcoffee.com

Thanks for reading and keep on changing the world with us!

Coffee of the Month – May

Honduras Coffee
The perfect blend of rich molasses tones with slight hints of caramel and spice. Honduras is relatively new to high-end arabica coffees. Its soil, climate, and altitude are all perfect for coffee growing. This Honduras coffee has a pleasant brightness and a medium to heavy body to compliment the sweeter molasses and caramel tones. Our Honduras coffee is dark roasted coffee to bring out the fullest and best flavor!(This coffee is also available in Swiss Water Processed (SWP) Decaf in all available roast levels. Water processing coffee is the absolute best way to decaffeinate coffee, because it’s the safe decaf coffee.

Here’s some information on Honduras:
According to the Department of State’s Website (click this link to read more in-depth info. on Honduras), Honduras is slightly larger in size than Virginia with an area of 122,090 sq. km. Its capital city, Tegucigalpa has a population of just over 1,150,000 people and the overall population of Honduras is around 7.3 million people. The primary language spoken in Honduras is Spanish. Their main exports are Coffee, shrimp, bananas, palm oil, gold, zinc/lead concentrates, soap/detergents, melons, lobster, pineapple, sugar, lumber, and tobacco.

Our Honduras coffee is grown at altitudes above 4900 feet in rich volcanic soil. More importantly, we’ve formed partnerships with the farmers that grow this coffee through our purchasing and commitment to quality with Agros. We’ve been able to work there towards breaking the cycle of poverty! Our Honduras coffee is one of the best coffees in the world. It’s also ethical coffee.

We hope you love this Rich Honduras Dark Roast as much as we do!

New is a great thing!

It’s been a little while since we’ve posted a blog post. This is just a note to let you know that we’re still here and have many exciting things coming. We’ve diverted a lot of our focus (temporarily!) from the blog to the many new and exciting changes coming to you soon!

Here’s a sneak peak:

1.) Coffee Conversation Cards go online! – Our popular club inserts will no longer be using unnecessary paper and taking up unnecessary room in your box. All of our customers will be able to see it on our blog and Facebook as well as opt in to receive it via email.
2.) New Email Newsletter – Our Customers can now opt to receive a monthly newsletter updating them on happenings at CICR as well as Agros Village updates and news pertaining to the effectiveness of your support for these third-world farmers.
3.) A 5lb. Coffee Lover’s Club “Wholesale” option – Receive your favorite coffee in bulk and receive great pricing. In a time where many are having to raise their prices, we’re trying to find ways to keep our prices where they are and yet find ways to continually give back to the farmers. – Starts May 1st

Note: Our Coffee Lover’s Club Wholesale option has been changed slightly since the original posting of this article.  Our new options can be found here.

and more!

Be sure that your account information with us is up to date to receive the latest newsletters and notices. You’re welcome to email the information to us at customerservice@camanoislandcoffee.com, call us toll-free at 866-387-JAVA (5282), or send us mail at:

April Coffee of the Month –Papua New Guinea Coffee

Papua New Guinea – Medium Roast

Papua New Guinea CoffeeOur Papua New Guinea coffee is one of our most popular coffees which is entirely understandable given it’s undertones that provide hints of cocoa. It has a medium to full body and is considered by many to be among the finest and most expensive coffee in the world. Most of PNG’s arabica coffee comes from trees that were uprooted in Jamaica (Blue Mountain) and replanted in PNG.

Our Papua New Guinea Coffee

Papua New Guinea CoffeeAccording to the Department of State’s website (click the link if you’d like to read all the in depth details on PNG), PNG is roughly the size of the state of California and has around 6.3 million people. It has three official languages (English, Tok Pisin, and Motu) as well as close to 860 other languages which plays a huge part in the overall fragmentation of the country and it’s people. Another topic of note is that PNG only has 49.3% literacy.

Papua New Guinea CoffeePapua New Guinea is known as a country ripped in pieces by civil war, lawlessness and poverty. Yet in the last few years, thanks to many factors including sustainable coffee purchasing, Papua New Guinea has started down the road to recovering it’s economy and government corruption. It’s a long road ahead, but we have helped immensely and can continue to help just through responsible purchasing.

Jeff’s blog post on Monday will make a great point: Don’t buy coffee at a price that negatively affects the coffee farmers and then throw money their way later on to sooth your conscience. Instead, feel confident and proud that you are not only helping these people monetarily through your purchasing, but working together with them in sustainable practice. It truly blesses both you and them to think about it that way, and that is the truth! Instead buy ethical coffee from a coffee club like our Coffee Lover’s Club!

That’s it for this one! Thanks for reading.

Teaching Ethical Business – Edmonds Community College

This note is a little late and we apologize for that! On Friday, February 27th, Camano Island Coffee Roasters was able to host a class of 19 people from Edmonds Community College. Jeff gave them a tour and was able to talk with them about sustainable business. Another hot topic they discussed was a very important topic to us at CICR: Ethical Business. The class received the discussion warmly and were open and inquisitive. Thank you to Edmonds Community College for the opportunity to spend time sharing our business and our vision with you!
